In the Volcanoes national park there are golden monkeys that can be trekked in addition to the Mountain gorillas. This rare species of monkeys is endemic to Mgahinga national park and Parc National des Volcans.
These monkeys have a weight 10 to 25 pounds with a golden body, cheeks and tail that has contrasting black limbs, crown and tail-end. So far there is quite little known about the ecological necessities of the golden monkey, and the subspecies population numbers have never been determined. They are also occupants of the lofty montane forests of the Virungas with the gentle eyed Mountain gorillas. These primates face some of the same threats as gorillas like snares set for small antelopes, human encroachment and people moving into their habitat to fetch wood.
