Nyarubuye Memorial Site

The Nyarubuye Genocide Memorial is found in approximately 35 kilometers from the southern town of Kibungo. It is nestled in the Kirehe district, of the Eastern province, this former church plus its accompanying school and convent of the Benebikira Sisters are an aide memoire of the horrific violence after the 100 days of ignorance that took place at this site during Rwanda’s 1994 genocide. These naive people had been trying to escape from the border to Tanzania. In the year 2003, the school turned out to be functional again; the convent, however, remains empty, apart from the bones of the victims, and will be turned into a memorial and education centre
In Nyarubuye Genocide Memorial, you can find genocide remains like clothes, thermoses, dishes, and shoes abandoned by victims. These are preserved in the nunnery buildings. 338 skulls, 2,338 human bones are also preserved after having appropriate treatment.

I t is internationally famous for having been visited by dignities among those who paid a visit were Dr Boutros Ghali, the UN general secretary at the time. During 1995, it was visited by Mr. Yoweri Museveni, president of Uganda. Others like Rhénanie Palatinate Government has contributed to its rehabilitation with 10,000 DM.

From 1997 together with INMR, the Ministry of youth, sports and culture started the treatment of genocide remains (bones, skulls, clothes and other objects). These remains are temporarily being preserved in rooms of the former nunnery which will be turned into Genocide Memorial.
