Kigali Genocide Memorial Center
Kigali genocide memorial is the nearest site as you come from the airport. This has been built in memory of the 1994 Rwanda Genocide where thousands of civilians lay down there lives innocently. No other country intervened in the matter when people were slaughtering themselves.
This Memorial Center is located in its own new building in Rwanda’s capital city of Kigali about 2 hours north of our main museum in Butare. It was opened in 2004 in Rwanda’s capital city of Kigali about 2 hours north of the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda situated in Butare (I.N.M.R.).
This center is placed in the Gasabo district approximately 3 km from the Kigali City Center. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is the most prominent among the others set up. I case you are staying in a hotel with in Kigali, you may easily get to this site.
In this building are the left over born of the fallen civilians. Many remains were gathered from different districts of Kigali and were laid to rest in the cemetery of this memorial site. The event of burring the victims’ corpses’ that have been found in ditches and toilets is still going on. Since 2000, Kigali City began the treatment of different objects which could serve as materiel proofs of the genocide (clothes, bones. and other belongings like weapons that were used during the genocide).
This site contains oral testimonies collected from different Kigali city quarters, human bones, and skulls that have been treated for conservation. Artillery used during the genocide like machetes; clubs, swords are also preserved there. Kigali Genocide Memorial also has things like rosaries, identity cards, shoes, clothes, and pipes, deserted by victims.
This Center was launched during the tenth commemoration of the genocide victims. When you get to this sit, it is divided into carious units like: exposition rooms of genocide proofs, a documentation center and an education center for peace and reconciliation.
