Rwenzori Mountains National park

This highland park was gazzetted in 1991. It sits on an area of 996km sq and is designed with snow at its peak. Below is the hiking itinerary.

Day1: Drive to Rwenzori National Park

Early in the morning, our safari guide will collect you from your overnight hotel and drive you to Rwenzori national Park. This renowned landscape is bisected by the Uganda –Congo border which passes through Mt Stanley the highest peak. The part of Rwenzori in Uganda is protected by Mountain Rwenzori National Park. At times this mountain is referred to as the mountains of the moon. Get to the park in the evening and enjoy your dinner and overnight at

Day2: Nyakalengijo to Nyabitaba

Rise early in the morning for breakfast and start your trek at Nyakalegijo at the base of the Rwenzori. You will get porters to carry your luggage and your guide will escort you and you walk for about five hours passed the trail. This trail takes you passed farmlands to the boundary of the park beyond which it follows the Mubuku River. On the way you will come across some monkey species and if you have the chance, you may meet a mountain elephant. Cross the Mahoma tributary prior to starting a long, steep climb up onto a huge ridge to arrive at the Nyabitaba hut.

Day3: Nyabitamba to Mubuku River John hut

Get up early in the morning for breakfast and start on your adventure. Note that this trek takes about 7hours to john Matte hut. You trek passed Mobuku and Bujuku rivers by Kurt Scarfer bridge. Continue climbing and descend through bamboo forest moss and lichen festooned trees. At this point the sun often brings a tantalizing glimpse of gold-struck Margerita and Alexandria peaks. After the trek start off and walk to the giant lobelia and groundsel zone, a vegetation type limited to East Africa’s highest mountains. Get to John Matte hut where you will spend the night.

Day4:John Matte to Bujuku

Following your early morning breakfast, carry on with your hike. Breathtaking views down the valley start your day as you pass via the boggy path. This route goes across the lower Bigo bog as you hike the upper Bigo Bog where a boardwalk has been constructed to assist walkers. In clear weather, there are supper views of mt Stanley at the head of this cavernous, glacier- carved valley. You will later arrive at the Bujjuku Lake and arrive Bujuku camp. Day5: Bujuku to Scott Elliot Pass/Kitandara

After your morning breakfast, continue with your expedition and climb a head of the gully a metal ladder takes you over a steep section after which the trail is divided into two. The trail on your right leads up to Elena camp and mountain Starnely on a steep trail. This trail needs an ice axe, mountain boots, crampons and ropes. Beyond the pass the route runs downhill beneath the massive cliffs of Mt Baker. There after carefully descend to Elena camp for lunch. In case you are not so tired, head to Kitandara lakes.

Day6: Kitandara to Freshfield pass then Guy Yeoman.

Rise up early in the morning and prepare your breakfast and continue with your trek. Freshfield is along flat traverse through tracts of fabulously colourful moss beyond which the long descent to Nyakalengija begins. A difficult traverse of more borders and steeply sloping rock is followed by an easier but still challenging trudge in crampons along the starnely plateau before the final ascent.

Day7: Guy Yeoman to Nyabitaba

Having finished your breakfast get back to your trek. A thigh bursting climb but worth doing leads you from fresh field pass is rewarding with fabulous views of the lakes of Kitandara and the DR Congo. The descent to Nyabitamba takes about 5hours. Below Guy Yeoman the way descends the cliffs of Kichuchu. The route is quite muddy as you pass via the Mubuku River twice before climbing upwards to Nyabitamba and finish the circuit.

Day 8: Nyabitaba to Nyakalengija

After your breakfast, head to your accommodation. The descent from Nyabitaba to Nyakalengija takes about 2-3 hours. You have to pass the bogs and bamboo forest to carry on to yours second descent up to Nyakalengija. Relax after your tedious expedition.

Day 9: Drive back to Kampala

Following your tedious hike drive back to Kampala to enjoy your flight back home.
